World Mental Health Day is celebrated on the 10th October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health. The day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide. This year, World Mental Health Day by WHO focuses on Suicide Prevention.
To celebrate the World Mental Health Day 2019 and show our concern on suicide prevention, SCOPH CIMSA-BEM KM FK UNAND held a community development called MARVEL (Mental Illness Prevention in School). Before we started the intervention to the target, we held a pre-intervention on 8th September 2019 in Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University. In this activity, members of SCOPH CIMSA-BEM KM FK UNAND gave materials about mental health and how to do the assessment and intervention on suicide prevention in school.
Mental Health Community Care (MHCC) Kota Padang represented by Puti Dewi Sartika, M.Psi was our speaker. The main activity of MARVEL took place in SMA Negeri 1 Padang and was participated by 20 students of Pusat Konsultasi Remaja (PKR) SMA Negeri 1 Padang, also 30 students from the 10th grade. The goal of this activity is to increase the knowledge and awareness about mental health-suicide prevention.
From the first intervention held on the 4th October 2019, SCOPH CIMSA-BEM KM FK UNAND gave the materials about mental health-suicide prevention in school to the members of PKR SMA Negeri 1 Padang. After that, we selected 5 of their members to become the “Let’s Talk” cadres. They will be the peer educators for other students to discuss about mental health problems in school environment and also share further information about how to prevent suicide.
The second intervention was held on 5th October 2019. The “Let’s Talk” cadre had an opportunity to share about mental health-suicide prevention to 30 students from the 10th grade. In this intervention, to tighten the relationships with the community, we did some games to the students as a bonding activity.
By this activity, we expect the knowledge and soft-skills in preventing suicide of SCOPH CIMSA-BEM KM FK UNAND’s members and also the “Let’s Talk” cadres will improve. We hope the awareness of the students about mental health and how to do the assessment as well as doing an intervention on suicide prevention in school will improve.
